Airframe Ultra Josh Q&A, August 3 2026
Discord-voted answers on playtests, maps, cosmetics, mods, and the September 6 Direct.
On August 3, 2026, Josh answered Discord-voted questions about Airframe Ultra. This is not a patch note and not a ship date. The full game is still coming soon on Steam for Windows. Read the answers as design intent: what playtests are for, what will wait until after 1.0, and what beta racers should not assume is permanent. Confirm anything time-sensitive on Steam news and the Links Hub.
The Q&A sits between two public tests. Megacity Open had already run in late June. Desperada — Steam’s September Beta 5: Desperada Join the Playtest — was still ahead. On August 20, Akupara also posted that a ten-year Direct on September 6, 2026 at noon PST (Akupara Twitch, hosted with Alpha Beta Gamer) would include Airframe Ultra news. Use this page for the August answers; use those other pages for the weekends themselves.
Why playtests exist
Josh’s first point is the one players skip: playtests exist to test design, balance, and flow, not to drip a finished product. A weekend that feels janky is doing its job if it shows whether a circuit, a shop, or a vote pad is readable. The February 2026 Next Fest open beta, Megacity Open, and Desperada are instruments. They are not stealth launches. Online PvP, online co-op, and split-screen all belong in that design; a given build may hide a mode so the team can watch one loop at a time.
If you only log in to grind cosmetics, you will hate the next answer. If you log in to tell them the vote pads feel worse than a menu, you are using the test the way they asked.
Maps, polish, and custom courses
Old maps will get a polish pass before 1.0. That is the Oceandrive-through-Estate set from closed betas and the Next Fest open beta, not a promise of a new atlas every month. Warehouse stays the lobby. Course notes for how those tracks ride today live in the tracks guide and the timeline on Beta History.
Official custom maps are not on the roadmap. If a Discord thread treats user courses as a 1.0 checkbox, that thread is ahead of the studio. Fan maps may exist in the wild later; they are not a listed deliverable. Do not skip a playtest because you are waiting for a workshop tab that is not planned.
Balance comes after features
Balance work is scheduled later, after features finish. Live buffs and nerfs come after launch. That matches the Next Fest recap tone: Hopper got piled on, Bluntnose ate most of the picks, shotgun beat SMG, minigun and plasma pistol looked weaker than old glory — and the response was notes, not an emergency patch branch. During playtests, report whether a gun or a bike ruins the flow. Do not expect a mid-weekend hotfix list that looks like a live-service title.
Weapon hold-times from the open-beta recap (Bat, Pipe, Machete, Crowbar in melee; Blaster, Shotgun, SMG, Rebar in ranged) are telemetry, not a forever tier list. Copy a kit into the loadout planner for the current test, then be ready to rebuild when 1.0 numbers move.
Settings, accessibility, cosmetics, mods
More settings and accessibility are on the roadmap. Rebindable keys already landed in the February 2026 open beta. Treat extra options as coming with the client, not as a reason the current playtest is “unfinished” in a way that makes it useless. If a menu fights you, file it. Josh already said a menu overhaul and new-player onboarding were on the list after Next Fest.
Beta cosmetics are not a forever locker. When EXP and leveling ship, players will lose current cosmetics. Beta racers get exclusive cosmetics and can re-earn looks through the new progression. That sentence is why Desperada’s shops and bike building matter: the garage is the next systems test, and your February paint job is not a museum piece. Back up a character file if you like the face. Do not assume the inventory tab survives.
Modding is under consideration, with a hard line: they will block mods that harm matchmade online play. Offline tinkering and online-safe extras are a different conversation from injecting a railgun into a public circuit. If you care about mods, say so on Discord with that constraint attached. Do not show up to a public lobby with a client that breaks other people’s races.
New modes, garments, and the Direct
New modes are possible. That is a door, not a calendar. Circuits of three races were the public Next Fest loop; single races were pulled for that test and are slated to return at launch. Split-screen and online play are both in the product. Extra modes would sit on top of that, not replace it.
Community garments are not officially planned. Fan coats and Discord fit contests are fun. They are not a listed pipeline. Wear what the creator ships; do not hold a playtest hostage for a UGC clothing store.
Watch the September 6 Direct if you want the next public sentence from Akupara. Then go play the open window if one is live — Desperada is the September Join the Playtest — and send bugs to the tracker on Links. Airframe Ultra remains coming soon. Josh’s answers are a map of what they will not pretend is done.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers for racers still learning Megacity West.
When was the Josh Q&A?
August 3, 2026. Questions were voted on Discord. It is a design Q&A, not a patch and not a ship date. The full game is still coming soon.
Will my beta cosmetics carry into 1.0?
Not as they sit today. When EXP and leveling ship, current cosmetics go away. Beta racers get exclusive cosmetics and can re-earn looks through the new progression.
Are official custom maps coming?
No. Josh said official custom maps are not on the roadmap. Old maps get a polish pass before 1.0. That is not a workshop promise.
Will they balance bikes and guns during every playtest?
Balance is scheduled after features finish. Live buffs and nerfs come after launch. Playtests are for design, balance data, and flow — not a weekly hotfix show.
Are mods allowed?
Modding is under consideration, but they will block mods that harm matchmade online play. Do not take an online-breaking client into a public circuit.
What is the September 6 Direct?
Akupara's ten-year Direct on September 6, 2026 at noon PST on Akupara Twitch, hosted with Alpha Beta Gamer. Steam news said it would include Airframe Ultra news.
